Pacific Collections
Aquarium of the Pacific Store
This 5,500 sf store was designed to reflect the ocean with hand-carved flying fish racing across the rippled ceiling. Glass shelves were sandblasted to mimic the end of a wave rolling back into the sea. To manage high-volume attendance, the store had two sales desks, one in the center of the room and the other near the exit. The buying mission was developed from the Aquarium's mission of conservation. Most items sold were made sustainably and interpreted the cultures of the Pacific Rim and the people living there.

The centrally located sales desk featured four POS locations and lighted jewelry cases on two sides, accessible by a sales associate behind the desk.
A high wall of windows posed a challenge: maximizing selling space without interrupting the natural light and view of the plaza. Tall glass cases with removable locking doors and adjustable shelves made hand-blown glass, ceramics, and jewelry sparkle. Utilizing the natural light and lowering the sales desk made the 1700 sf space seem larger.
Children’s Shop
Getty Center
The challenge was to create a shop for children in a space with a very high ceiling and massive sculptural wood pieces containing lights. I dropped the sightline for young people by encircling the room with large mural panels made from pages of the popular Getty publication, An ABC of What Art Can Be, written by Meher McArthur and illustrated by Esther Pearl Watson.
The Getty Villa Museum Store
This 1200 sf building project was all new construction at the Getty Villa in Malibu. The museum store had previously been 300 sf. The Villa renovations gave us much more space tucked under a new restaurant and across from the theater and museum entrance. In addition to a larger retail footprint, we had a large storeroom and adjacent offices. We mimicked materials and architectural elements of the museum and surrounding gardens.
Degas Scarf
Edgar Degas was mocked as a Modernist in his lifetime. When the Getty acquired his painting The Milliners, I drew the color palette from the scraps of ribbons used to decorate bonnets in the foreground of the painting and put a modern twist on the hand-loomed silk scarf.
Ancient Greek Doll
Inspired by articulated dolls found in ancient Greek ruins. Young Greek girls played with these dolls much the way girls do today. Fragments of garments, tiny gold jewelry, and kistis (a small box to hold accessories) have been discovered. This reproduction doll is made of resin with an ivory patina.
Etruscan Rosette Jewelry
Gold-plated sterling silver and garnet jewelry made by reproducing an Etruscan Rosette created about 500 B.C. in the Getty Villa collection.
Tilliard Suite
The intricate pattern reproduced on silk scarves and ties, and picture frames is taken from the hand-loomed upholstery of the 18th century lit à la turque bed designed by Jean-Baptiste Tilliard in the collection of the Getty Center.
Anna Atkins Dinnerware
Interpretation of 19th century photographer, Anna Atkins’ botanical cyanotypes made into porcelain mugs and dessert plates and a box of notecards.
Hoefnagel Dinnerware
Details of delicate 16th century paintings by Joris Hoefnagel intertwined with Georg Bocskay’s ornate calligraphy in Mira Calligraphiae Monumenta decorate these porcelain mugs and dessert plates.
Merien Dinnerware
Details of delicate botanical drawings by Maria Sibylla Merian, 17th century naturalist and the earliest to document observations about insects, decorate these porcelain mugs and dessert plates.
